Summer Garden Bird Survey 2016

Welcome to the Cambridgeshire Bird Club Summer Garden Bird Survey 2016.

As many of you will know, in the winter of 2014-15 a survey of the garden birds of Cambridgeshire was set up. Many people said that they enjoyed this and so the decision has been made to continue the work.

If you took part in the winter survey 2015/16, thank you so much, I look forward to receiving your results in March and I hope that you will feel able to take part in this summer survey. The method used is the same as for the previous surveys.

If you have not taken part before, welcome to the Cambridgeshire Bird Club Garden Bird Survey, the details can be found below.

The survey will commence on Sunday 6th March 2016 and run until Saturday 1st October 2016.

The survey recording week will run from each Sunday to the following Saturday.

The survey is for those people whose gardens are in the area recorded by the bird club1.

Mark off with an X on the survey form the bird species feeding or foraging in your garden for each week given – the numbers of each species are not needed, just that you have seen it feeding or foraging.

The form is available as a download from the website either as a pdf for you to print and keep by the window or an Excel spreadsheet to save and fill in.

The species included in the list are those noted for use of gardens as experienced by the Bedfordshire club survey. Species not at present listed may come to use the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough gardens during the time surveyed. Please do add into the open boxes any other bird species that use your garden for feeding or foraging.

Please only mark for birds actively using your garden. The birds must come into your garden and to be feeding or searching for food.

A species just flying over your garden does not count. However sights such as a hovering Kestrel looking into your garden for food does count.

At the end of the final week, (after Saturday 31st October 2016), please return your results to:
Email address:

or by post to:

15 School Lane,
CB23 2RE

by 30th November 2016.

When it comes to analysing the results it would help to know two facts about your garden. Firstly is your garden rural or urban, and secondly do you regularly provide food for the birds or not. Please could you mark these on the form.

If you wish to take part but miss several weeks please do start from the date that you are able and send in any data that you have collected. The data gathered will still be of interest and noted although this will not be used in the statistical data.

Should you require any further information please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page on the website or email myself, Rebecca Buisson at:

We hope that you enjoy surveying your garden and will continue to send in your results for future years to come.

Thank you for taking part.

1The bird club’s recording area is the modern administrative county of Cambridgeshire (this includes Huntingdonshire) and the unitary authority area of Peterborough.
